Jewelry Findings Explained: Clasps, Jump Rings, Pins and More

Jewelry findings are the small functional parts that connect, finish and secure a piece of jewelry. They include clasps, jump rings, pins, crimps, earring hooks, bead caps and many other components. 1. Clasps

A clasp opens and closes a necklace or bracelet. Choose one according to the weight of the piece, how often it will be worn and how easily the wearer can operate it.

Lobster clasps

Lobster clasps are compact, secure and widely used for bracelets and necklaces. They normally connect to a jump ring or short extender chain on the opposite end. Choose a larger clasp for a heavier design or when easier handling matters.

Toggle clasps

A toggle has a bar that passes through a ring. It can be decorative and easy to operate, but the finished jewelry must have enough tension and weight to help keep the bar in position. It is less suitable for a very loose, lightweight bracelet that may catch on objects.

Magnetic clasps

Magnetic clasps are convenient for wearers who find small spring mechanisms difficult. 2. Jump rings and split rings

Jump rings are small metal rings with a cut that allows them to open. They connect clasps, charms, chain and other findings. To open one, hold each side with pliers and twist the ends in opposite directions. Do not pull the ring into a wide oval, because it may be difficult to restore the original shape.

Split rings resemble tiny key rings. Their overlapping coils make them more secure, but they take longer to attach. They are useful when a standard jump ring may open under repeated movement.

Check before buying: outside diameter, wire thickness, metal color and whether the ring is open, closed or split.

3. Head pins and eye pins

Both findings are straight pieces of wire used to hold beads, but their ends are different.

  • Head pins have a flat, ball or decorative stop at one end. Add beads, then form a loop at the other end to create a dangle.
  • Eye pins have a preformed loop at one end. After adding beads, form a second loop to create a linked component.

Check that the pin head is wider than the bead hole. Also match the wire thickness to the bead hole and the desired strength. Very thin wire may bend too easily; wire that is too thick will not pass through the bead.

4. Crimp beads, crimp tubes and crimp covers

Crimps secure the end of beading wire around a clasp or connector. A crimp bead is usually round; a crimp tube is cylindrical. Both are compressed with an appropriate crimping tool or method.

A crimp cover is a separate decorative finding placed over a properly finished crimp to create a smoother, bead-like appearance. It does not replace the crimp itself.

Use crimps designed for the diameter and construction of your beading wire. A mismatch can cause slipping or damage the wire.

5. Bead caps, cones and spacers

These findings help shape the visual rhythm of a design.

  • Bead caps sit against one or both sides of a bead and can frame a focal bead.
  • Cones gather multiple strands or finish tassels.
  • Spacers separate beads, add metal color and prevent larger decorative elements from crowding one another.

When selecting caps, compare the cap diameter with the bead diameter. A cap that is too large hides the bead; one that is too small may look accidental.

6. Earring findings

Common earring components include:

  • Ear wires or fishhook findings
  • Lever-back hooks
  • Posts and butterfly backs
  • Hoops
  • Clip-on findings

Always test the completed connection with firm, controlled pressure before wearing or selling the jewelry. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions if glue is part of the construction.

8. Bail connectors and charm holders

A bail attaches a pendant or focal component to a chain, cord or bead strand. Some bails are glued to a flat-back component; others pinch, screw or loop through a drilled pendant.

A dainty clasp and thin jump ring may suit a lightweight necklace but not a bracelet made with large glass or stone beads. Consider:

  3. Wearer's ability to use the clasp
